Legal Assistance

Provide legal assistance in divorce, domestic violence, custody, child abuse and neglect cases.

Give advice (but not legal representation) in paternity, name change cases and in annulment matters.

ENLS assists those who have legal issues impacting the safety and stability of the family. 


ENLS offers assistance in the following matters: 

  • Domestic Violence

  • Custody (advice and may assist in preparation of court papers)

  • Child Abuse & Neglect (advice to parents incl. foster parents)

  • Child Support

  • Spousal Support/Alimony

  • Parenting Time/Visitation 

  • Uncontested Divorce - assistance is available through pro se clinics


NOTE: Parents facing a termination of their parental rights have the right to a state paid attorney. Please contact the Essex County Public Defender's Office at (973) 648-6207        

Domestic Violence

ENLS helps survivors of domestic violence and of sexual assault obtain restraining orders and other relief to keep them and their families safe from future violence. ENLS provides help with the following:

  • Final Restraining Order (DV) or Final Protection Order (SA)

  • Relief such as custody, support, and possession of a residence

  • Other civil litigation matters that result from victimization such as housing and immigration issues

  • Referral to the Essex County Family Justice Center

  • Assistance with NJ Victim Compensation claims

  • Group Presentations re: domestic violence and sexual assault


NJ Victims of Crime Compensation Office 

Offers financial benefits to victims of domestic violence

Civil legal assistance for victims of domestic violence and a host of other services including safety planning and law enforcement is available on a walk-in basis at:
